Tinubu, IGP Reacts To Killing Of Lawyer On Christmas In Lagos

The All Progressive Congress Party APC Presidential Candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has shared the grief and frustration of Nigerians over senseless killing of Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem by a police officer on Christmas Day in Lagos.

Tinubu who took to his social media platform on Monday to express sadness to the incident, added that the avoidable tragedy, which cost a family a beloved member and the country a diligent legal professional, underscores, yet again, the crucial importance and urgency of reforming the Nigeria Police Force.

According to him, “The important institution must live up to its constitutional mandate of protecting the people and keeping the peace. Encounters with law enforcement agents should not result in death, injury, or undue harassment for law-abiding citizens. That is unacceptable”, Tinubu voiced.

The APC Presidential Candidate sent his sincere condolences to Omobolanle’s family, while urged the Inspector General of Police and other responsible authorities to ensure speedy justice in this matter and demonstrate even greater dedication to the nationwide implementation of measures designed to uphold professionalism within the force.

Also, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has condemned the shooting and killing of Mrs Omobolanle Raheem, lawyer who was allegedly shot and killed by a Policeman attached to Ajiwe Police Station, Ajah, Lagos State.

In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Monday, the IGP, who described the incident as unfortunate and sad, ordered speedy investigation and prosecution of the officers responsible for the ugly and unprofessional act, which doesn’t portray the Nigeria Police Standard Operating Procedure and core values.

While the IGP commiserated with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased as he prayed for the repose of her soul.

He further assured the general public of justice in the case while he warns officers and men of the Force to be professional and people-oriented in the discharge of their duties and operate within the ambit of the law, as the Force’s leadership will not condone any inappropriate or unprofessional acts.

Meanwhile, it was reported that there was pandemonium in the Ajah area of Lagos State on Sunday 25th December, 2022 (Christmas Day) when a policeman attached to the Ajah Police Station shot dead the female lawyer, Raheem.

While the report further explained that Raheem, her sister, and four children were coming from an eatery in their car around 11am when the cop tried to stop them, as source said the woman was trying to make a U-turn under the Ajah Bridge when the cop shot at her vehicle.

The bullet was said to have hit the victim; she was rushed to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, adding that the officer was in custody.

He said, “The officer involved in the shooting is an ASP. He has been arrested, detained, and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for further investigations.”
